The Lock Technician Association of New Zealand (LTANZ) has launched a petition calling for the locksmith industry to be regulated in New Zealand. The petition will remain open for 12 months, and we need the support of locksmiths throughout the country to gather as many signatures as possible.
Why regulation matters
Locksmiths and lock technicians hold a position of considerable trust. We work with the security of people’s homes, businesses, vehicles and access-control systems.
However, New Zealand currently allows untrained, unqualified and unlicensed people to operate as locksmiths. This leaves the public vulnerable to poor workmanship, property damage, excessive charges and potential misuse of sensitive security knowledge.
LTANZ is asking Parliament to introduce legislation requiring practicing locksmiths to:
- Hold a Certificate of Approval issued by the Private Security Personnel Licensing Authority (PSPLA); and
- Be a member of one of the three locksmith associations operating in New Zealand.
These requirements would help promote proper training, professional standards, consumer protection and greater accountability across our industry.
We need your help
Please support this important step towards the professional regulation of locksmithing in New Zealand.
Here’s how you can help:
- Sign the petition.
- Ask your staff, colleagues, suppliers, friends and family to sign.
- Display the attached QR-code poster at your premises or trade counter.
- Share the petition through your website, email signature and social-media pages.
- Provide the QR code to customers who would like to support the campaign.
Every signature helps demonstrate to Parliament that regulation has strong support from both the locksmith industry and the wider public.
Let’s work together to protect the public, strengthen professional standards and secure the future of our industry.
